Trail Blazers Visit Martin Luther King Jr’s Atlanta Birthplace and Butler Street YMCA

Brandon Roy, Greg Oden, Taurean Green, Channing Frye, and Jarrett Jack crowded into the doorway peering silently into the small upstairs bedroom at the home at 501 Auburn Avenue. – the birth place of Martin Luther King, Jr. On the eve of the Martin Luther King holiday, the Trail Blazer players took advantage of an off day in Atlanta, GA for a first-hand history lesson on the impact of the slain civil rights leader.

"It was a great learning experience," said Oden of the 90-minute tour of Atlanta’s historic Auburn Ave. "I have a lot more insight now into what Martin Luther King and his family stood for."

The Trail Blazers also toured the historic Butler Street YMCA and the gymnasium where a young Martin Luther King once played basketball. A throng of young and old alike turned out to meet the young Trail Blazer players.

"The great Walt Frazier first dribbled a basketball in this very room, so I think it’s so appropriate to have an NBA team, and especially the Trail Blazers because of what Trailblazing means, visit and interact with us," said Sonny Walker, Chief Volunteer Officer of the Butler Street YMCA. "Lots and lots of kids are going to be very excited that they got an opportunity to witness in person the Portland Trail Blazers and also to meet the first pick in the NBA draft."
