And on Friday morning, first-rounder Shannon Brown and second-rounder Daniel Gibson were introduced to Cleveland in the Cavaliers' practice court at The Q, where they will be schooled by the man to their right – Head Coach Mike Brown – and the man standing inconspicuously in the back of the gym – LeBron James.
James, Coach Brown and a gathering of Cavaliers employees and local media got their first in-person look at the Cavaliers draft bounty. Brown, the 25th overall selection from Michigan State, was presented with his Cavaliers’ No. 6 jersey and Gibson, the 42nd overall choice, given No. 21.
It was a diverse crowd with a convergent characteristic: smiles – big, tangible, satisfied smiles – on the faces of all parties involved.
And why wouldn’t they be smiling?
Second-year GM, Danny Ferry – along with his assistants Chris Grant and Lance Blanks – got the player they coveted in the first round and tabbed the player who was a close No. 2 on their wish list in the second. All this without making a trade; something they were quite willing to do.
“We’re very excited to get both guys,” said Ferry. “I think they fit how we want to play and who we want to be. They’re very different players, but the one thing that they have in common is a tremendous work ethic and a great deal of pride in what they do on the defensive end of the court – which is an area that we made progress in last year, but we’re not there yet.”

"We wanted guys who were A. good people and B. quality basketball players and we got that," said Coach Brown. "We got two guys who can play both ends of the floor very well. And in time, hopefully they’ll bring a lot of wins to the Cleveland Cavaliers and to the city of Cleveland.
"They play extremely hard," Brown continued. "They’re both guys that are willing to grow, eager to learn and easy to coach."
That ballplayer, LeBron James, now has two more weapons that will keep teams from solely focusing on him. Gibson is a pure point guard – someone who can get the ball to the young King in half-court sets and in the open floor. Brown, who played with James in high school all-star games four years ago, is a perfect complement to the Chosen One – a player who can get him the ball and a strong finisher on the break when he gets it.
And of course, the newest Cavaliers were all smiles on Friday morning. The life-long dream of playing in the NBA has now come to fruition and both will be contributors to a team that was one quarter away from the Eastern Conference Finals and is on the rise.
The addition of Brown and Gibson can only accelerate the Cavaliers’ ascension.

“The last 24 hours for me have been crazy. I’ve been trying to relax and not get too jittery,” said the soft-spoken former Spartan. “My phone’s been ringing off the hook. But now I’m ready to get to work and I’m proud to be part of this.”
The 21-year-old Gibson was named Honorable Mention All-America by the AP following his sophomore season at Texas in which he averaged 13.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound guard shot .380 (101-266) from three-point range and scored in double figures 24 times during his sophomore season.
"The move from college to the pros will be a big transition," added Brown. "But with hard work and determination, anything is possible."
During his freshman season, he averaged 14.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game and was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year. In two seasons, Gibson started all 68 games he played for the Longhorns and, in his brief career at Texas, averaged 13.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.
"I just want to say that I’m happy to be part of the Cleveland Cavaliers organization," said the former Longhorn. "This is a great place to be. I love the family atmosphere and I’m looking forward to doing big things."
With their families by their sides as they posed for photos with their new lids and jerseys, Brown and Gibson were given a warm Cleveland welcome. Expect that Wine and Gold welcome to be many decibels louder when they’re running and gunning beginning next November at The Q.
“This is something that I’ve dreamed about and something that I’ve hoped for my whole life," added Gibson. "And it’s finally come true. So now I’m ready to get to work.”
