2006 Draft Preview
Gibson
As cavs.com’s 2006 NBA Draft Preview rolls on, we focus today on the diverse group of guards that will be making the leap from college to the pros.

Although the 2006 Draft lacks true superstar power, it is a deep draft and its deepest position is guard.

The Naismith Award winner (Redick) is among the backcourt players who intend to be first-rounders on June 28. But players like Randy Foye, Daniel Gibson and Jordan Farmar also expect to be among this year's top 30 picks. The Cavaliers -- who just might be in the market for one of these players -- will be keenly interested in which of these guards get chosen where.

OFFSEASON CENTRAL | 6.22: Forwards | 6.20: International Players

RANDY FOYE
Position: Guard
Height/Weight: 6-4, 210
Birthdate: September 9, 1983 (Newark, NJ)
College: Villanova
Could be more of a combo guard than a true point guard, Foye has the entire package. At 6-4, 210, the First Team All-American is also a defensive stalwart who can guard bigger players. Foye also came up big when his team needed him most, averaging nearly 24 ppg for Villanova in the NCAA Tournament. Foye can be an aggressive scorer, which can also be his downfall as he has a tendency to force bad shots. He has one of the quickest first steps in the college game, and that will translate well as the game speeds up in the NBA. A potential star, the senior guard figures to be off the board by the time the Cavaliers are on the clock.

RAJON RONDO
Position: Guard
Height/Weight: 6-1, 171
Birthdate: February 22, 1986 (Louisville, KY)
College: Kentucky
Rondo is a product of two of the most established basketball institutions in the country – Oak Hill Academy and U. of Kentucky. As point guards go, the sophomore sensation is a physical specimen, with the size, speed and strength to succeed on the next level. He led the SEC in assists as a sophomore (4.9) and ranked second in steals (2.0). Perhaps even more impressive is that he led his team in rebounding at 6.1 per game. His length and lateral quickness make him an excellent defender and he already has big game experience, starting 62 of 68 games for Tubby Smith at Kentucky.

JORDAN FARMAR
Position: Guard
Height/Weight: 6-2, 180
Birthdate: November 30, 1986 (Los Angeles, CA)
College: UCLA
Farmar doesn’t have all the physical attributes of Foye and Rondo, but he makes up for it with his intelligence and floor vision. As a sophomore, he led the Pac-10 in assists and led all Pac-10 freshmen in scoring (13.2 ppg) the year before. Farmar, who could very well be available at No. 25, has fantastic ball-handling and passing skills and is adept at pulling up for the mid-range jumper or penetrating to the hole. Farmar can make the jaw-dropping highlight reel pass, but is also prone to turnovers because of it. Not a great one-one-one defender, but can handle himself in a good defensive scheme.

DANIEL GIBSON
Position: Guard
Height/Weight: 6-2, 190
Birthdate: February 27, 1986 (Louisville, KY)
College: Texas
A natural point guard who excels both on and off the court, Gibson was both an All-American Honorable Mention athlete after his sophomore season at Texas, but was a member of the National Honor Society in high school. Gibson led the team in scoring as a freshman (14.2 ppg) and finished third (13.4) as a sophomore. He did, however, lead the club in assists and steals as a sophomore, while shooting 38 percent from beyond the arc. He’s not the passer and floor general that his predecessor, T.J. Ford, was, but he’s bigger and can shoot the ball better. A distinct possibility for the Cavaliers at No. 25.

SHANNON BROWN
Position: Guard
Height/Weight: 6-4, 205
Birthdate: November 29, 1985 (Maywood, IL)
College: Michigan State
Brown has wowed teams during pre-Draft workouts with his superior physical skills. He scored in double-figures in 61 of the 97 games he played in three seasons at Michigan State. Improved every year under Tom Izzo at East Lansing and was named All Big Ten Second Team as a junior. A tenacious defender, as well, Brown was selected to the Big Ten All-Defensive Team by the league’s coaches. Brown has great strength and length for the point guard position and although Izzo’s system had him more at the two in college, he excels with the ball in his hands.

J.J. REDICK
Position: Guard
Height/Weight: 6-4, 190
Birthdate: June 24, 1984 (Cookeville, TN)
College: Duke
Along with Adam Morrison, Redick is one of the more intriguing players in this year’s Draft. Back problems and a recent DUI have only added to the Draft-day mystery that will enshroud the Naismith Award winner. Redick is an absolute dead-eye shooter with incredible range. He is also a fierce competitor who doesn’t shy away from any challenge. As a senior, Redick won just about every award possible, yet he is not projected as a lottery pick. It’s unlikely that Duke’s all-time leading scorer will fall to the Cavaliers, but stranger things have happened on Draft night.
