On the evening of Friday June 24th, James will host a special invitation only Celebrity Kick Off reception for his "special guests" and his Bikeathon sponsors. The reception will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tangier Restaurant ballroom, located at 532 W. Market Street in Akron. The Celebrity Kick -Off Reception is sponsored by the Brennan Foundation. A limited number of tickets will be sold on a first come first served basis at a cost of $100 per ticket. Proceeds from this event will go to the James Family Foundation to benefit local charities. On Saturday, the first 2,000 registered riders ages 14 and over (youth 12-14 can ride if accompanied by an adult age 21 or over) will join LeBron and the NBA stars and celebrities on an 8-mile from downtown Akron throughout the city and back. The Bikeathon begins at 11 a.m. Following the ride, there will be an interactive Community Celebration in Lock 3 park downtown open to the public.
Also coming to Akron, child actors – brothers Oren and Zachary Williams – will ride with LeBron and 200 children ages 8-11 selected to participate in the Kids Ride hosted by the City of Akron and Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority at 10 a.m. Oren will be starring in the upcoming Martin Lawrence basketball comedy film, “Rebound,” and Zachary stars on the popular Nickelodeon “Romeo Show” as Romeo’s little brother, Gary. The Williams brothers will also be at the Community Celebration for photos and autographs.
"This will be a special day for Akron. The players and our other special guests are excited to be involved,” said Bikeathon executive director Chris Dennis. "The Bikeathon will benefit programs to help kids and families and we appreciate their support."
FirstMerit Bank branches will serve as registration outlets for the event. Any interested riders can stop in, complete a registration form and pay their fee directly at the bank. The registration cost is $25 for individuals, $50 for a family of four and $10 for each additional family member (up to six in a family maximum). Once registration is complete, riders will receive a Pledge Pack, including pledge form, pledge envelope, rider waiver form and rider handbook. All registered riders will receive “King for Kids” t-shirts which must be worn to ride at the event. To receive additional prizes, a minimum $100 in pledges must be raised. All riders are also required to wear bike helmets to participate.
Summa Health System and SummaCare are sponsoring the "Celebrity" riders. Other King for Kids sponsors include: Time Warner Cable, Squire, Sanders and Dempsey, L.L.P., HRSI/FirstCredit International, the Brennan Foundation, Robert Morris Pontiac/Cadillac/GMC, Centene, Nike, Coca-Cola, Bubblicious, Upper Deck, Roadway Express, Inc. and Subway.
The James Family Foundation will donate proceeds from the event to the Akron Area YMCA and the Akron Urban League. Registration forms are also available at the any of the City of Akron's recreation centers, Akron Area YMCA branches, and the Akron Urban League.
