Five Things to Know about Spencer Hawes

1) He’s classified as a center, but in today’s basketball terms is often labeled as a “stretch four/five,” meaning he can space out the floor with his outside shooting ability. Hawes knocked down a career-high 128 three-pointers last season, more than double the total he had through his first six years in the league (113). He connected on 42% of his three-pointers and 46% of his field goals last season for the 76ers and Cavaliers.

2) He has played for three NBA teams in his career prior to coming over to the Clippers. Originally, Hawes was the 10th overall pick by the Sacramento Kings in the 2007 NBA Draft. He played three seasons with the Kings before being traded to the 76ers on June 17, 2010. Mid-way through last season, Hawes was traded to the Cavaliers on February 20, 2014 after three-and-a-half seasons with the Kings. His best season in the NBA was 2013-14, where he averaged 13.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 80 games.

3) Hawes was born in Seattle, Washington and still calls Seattle home. He attended Seattle Preparatory High School, capturing the state championship in the 2005-06 season. Following his senior season at Seattle Prep, he was named a McDonald’s All-American, Parade Magazine All-American and also the 2006 Gatorade Boys Washington Player of the Year. He stayed home for college to attend the University of Washington in Seattle. In one season for the Huskies, he led the team in scoring (14.9 points) and was named to the Pac-10 all-freshman team. He lives in Seattle in the off-season.

4) He comes from a basketball family. His father, Jeff, played at Washington from 1972-74 and his uncle, Steve, played at Washington from 1970-72 and in the NBA for five teams over 10 seasons.

5) He is a huge Seattle Seahawks fan and was in attendance last season when they captured the Super Bowl. He is also very involved in politics and current events.
