Murray Brings D-League Success to the Arsenal


Anaheim Arsenal Name Dean Murray Assistant Coach

ANAHEIM, Calif., September 27, 2007 – Dean Murray begins his first season with the Anaheim Arsenal as an assistant coach for the 2007-08 season. With nearly 20 years of coaching experience, Murray is a veteran of both the Professional and College ranks and has previously coached in the NBA Development League with the Charleston Lowgators and the Columbus Riverdragons.

During the inaugural season of the NBA Development League, Murray was an assistant coach for the Charleston Lowgators under Head Coach and NBA Hall of Famer Alex English. Charleston won the NBDL regular season title and advanced to the NBDL Championship Series. The Charleston Lowgators also made the playoffs in Murray’s second season with the team. Working under former NBA player and Head Coach Jeff Malone the Columbus Riverdragons won the NBDL regular season title and advanced to the NBDL title game. The Riverdragons also set the NBDL record for best start to a season at 12-1 and finished with a regular season record of 30-18. During Murray’s three seasons as an assistant coach with the Lowgators and Riverdragons these teams had an overall record of 93-57.

Coach Murray most recently was the Head Coach of Neptunas Klaipeda of the Lithuanian Basketball League 1st Division. While there his team competed in both the Lithuanian Basketball League and the Baltic League which also included teams from Estonia and Latvia. His team finished 4th in the Lithuanian Basketball League and finished 10th in the 17 team Baltic League with the top 11 teams qualifying for the First Division of the Baltic League the following season. Murray was also selected as a coach for the Lithuania League All-Star game and coached with the Foreign All-Stars versus the Lithuanian All-Stars.

This makes the D-League even stronger and truly provides coaches with the opportunity to coach and work with the best players in the world.”

Murray worked the 2007 NBA Development League Pre-Draft camp in Dallas and was invited to the Atlanta Hawks mini-camp prior to the NBA Summer League in Utah. He has traveled throughout the world coaching touring basketball teams and speaking at various coaching clinics. A few of his most recent stops have included coaching a team of Professional Players that represented the US/China Cultural and Sports Exchange Association in China and speaking at a coaches clinic this past summer in the country of Macedonia.

Prior to his Professional Coaching career, Murray coached for 11 seasons in NCAA Division 1 with Coastal Carolina University, Charleston Southern University, SUNY-Stony Brook, and the University of North Florida. He was a member of Three Big South Championship Teams and advanced to the NCAA Division 1 Championships while an assistant at Coastal Carolina University.

A native of Monroe, NC, Murray attended Appalachian State University and was a member of the Men’s Basketball Team and also lettered one year for the Mountaineers Baseball Team. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education with a minor in Psychology. He also holds a Master’s of Education degree from the University of South Carolina.
