Miami HEAT Wins John I. Smith Award for HEAT Academy After School Initiatives
MIAMI, May 13 – The Miami HEAT announced today that it has been named recipient of the John I. Smith Award for its HEAT Academy after school educational initiatives by the Miami-Dade Coalition for Community Education at the 2008 School House Awards ceremony. The John I. Smith Award, which was named after a founding coalition member, is given to the person or organization that exemplifies support of “community education through overwhelming generosity, outstanding resources, visionary educational solutions to social challenges and unwavering commitment to the welfare of students and families.” The School House Awards are held yearly to recognize educational and community advocates who demonstrate exemplary support of community education.
HEAT Academy, an after school program that provides elementary school students with extra exposure to academics, particularly math, reading and science, is the flagship community initiative of the Miami HEAT. Operating since the 1999-2000 season, HEAT Academy, presented by Carnival Cruise Lines, has been implemented at three local inner city schools: Paul Laurence Dunbar Elementary, Little River Elementary, and Riverside Elementary. In addition to a curriculum that utilizes basketball themed lessons, students receive assistance with homework, have a safe place to be when their parents are not available, and most importantly, learn from positive role models who inspire kids to excel. Both HEAT players and staffers volunteer their time throughout the year to assist HEAT Academy students. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida is also a sponsor of HEAT Academy.
