Rasual Butler led the HEAT with 19 points, followed by 15 points from Mike James and 13 points from LaPhonso Ellis. Malik Allen chipped in with 11 points to round out Miami’s double-figure scorers. Ken Johnson led the HEAT in rebounding with 10 boards to go along with his eight points. The HEAT shot 47 percent from the field (40-of-85), 40 percent from the three-point line (6-of-15) and 85 percent from the free-throw line (17-of-20).

After a mad scurry for the basketball on the second miss, Butler pulled down the rebound and raced to the other end of the floor in an attempt to tie the game with 14 seconds left to play. Dallas guard Steve Nash stepped in and drew an offensive foul on Butler. Nash made two free-throws to extend the Mavericks lead to 90-86 with 10 seconds to play after the HEAT had to foul. On the next play James was fouled trying to attempt a three-point shot and connected on all three attempts to pull the HEAT to within one point with three seconds on the clock. The HEAT had to foul Nash again, but he made only one of two, giving Miami one last shot at a tie or win. Jones suffered a sprained ankle in Friday’s game versus New Jersey. Best sprained his ankle two minutes into the Atlanta game on Jan. 1st. Rookie swing-man Caron Butler scored 16 points while Eddie House, making his first start of the season, chipped in with 15 points. Brian Grant pulled down 12 rebounds to go with his eight points.

Richard Jefferson put on aerial display on Friday night, scoring 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting, including six dunks
in leading the New Jersey Nets to a 100-80 victory over the HEAT at AmericanAirlines Arena. Jefferson, who found out earlier in the day that he was going to be in the NBA’s slam dunk contest in February, scored his first four field goals on an alley-oop from Jason Kidd, two reverse-dunks and one facial over HEAT forward Malik Allen. The Nets shot 58 percent from the field on 39-of-67 shot attempts with 11 dunks. Rasual Butler led Miami in scoring with 12 points, while Stepania pulled down 10 rebounds, his 11th double-figure rebounding game of the season. Caron Butler was the only HEAT starter to reach double-figure scoring with 11 points. Allen and Eddie Jones scored nine points each. HEAT center Brian Grant was ejected with 10:24 remaining in the third quarter after receiving his second technical foul. Miami shot 38 percent from the field and committed 18 turnovers. New Jersey had 22 fast-break points and 46 points in the paint.
