Wade Named Eastern Conference Player of the Week

MIAMI, February 5 – Miami HEAT guard Dwyane Wade was named the NBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the week ending February 4. This marks the 19th time in franchise history a HEAT player has earned Player of the Week honors and the sixth time Wade has received the accolades, breaking a franchise-record he shared with Alonzo Mourning. For Wade, it is the second time this season he has received the honor, previously he captured the honors for the week ending Jan. 14. He has received the honor at least once in each of his four seasons in the league. Utah’s Mehmet Okur was selected as the NBA’s Western Conference Player of the Week.

Wade averaged 33.7 points, 7.8 assists, 5.0 rebounds, 3.00 steals and 1.33 blocks last week in leading the HEAT to a 3-0 record with a pair of wins over the Milwaukee Bucks and a home victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Additionally, he connected on 59.3 percent (32-54) of his field goal attempts and 90.2 percent (37-41) of his free throw attempts. He led the HEAT in scoring in all three contests; in assists, steals and minutes twice each and in blocks once. Wade has now scored at least 20 points in a franchise-record 14 consecutive games, breaking the franchise record in the win over Cleveland on Feb. 1. In the 92-89 victory over the Cavs he also set a franchise-record in free throws made (career-high 23) and points in a quarter (24 in the fourth). Wade, who finished with 41 points in the win over the Cavs, scored Miami’s final 15 points as the HEAT overcame a 12-point fourth quarter deficit. He closed the week out with a 32-point, 11-assist, 8-rebound, four-steal performance in Miami’s 117-98 win at Milwaukee, where earlier in the day he became the ninth player in Marquette University men’s basketball history to have his number retired.

Through the first 47 games of the season, Wade leads the HEAT in scoring average (28.8 ppg), points (1,152), field goals made (380) and attempted (783), free throws made (374) and attempted (457), assists (313) and steals (85). He ranks second in the NBA in steals per game (2.13 spg), tied for fourth in scoring average, seventh in assists per game (8.0) and tied for 11th in minutes per game (39.1).
