CHARLOTTE HORNETS ADD WASTE MANAGEMENT TO ROSTER IN EFFORT TO GREEN TIME WARNER CABLE ARENA

December 16, 2014 – Along with the return of purple and teal, the Charlotte Hornets will also be introducing the color green this season after signing a new partnership with Waste Management of Charlotte.  As part of the multi-faceted agreement, Waste Management will serve as Time Warner Cable Arena’s waste and recycling partner, helping to minimize the building’s environmental impact.

With this partnership, Time Warner Cable Arena, which hosts more than 150 events each year, will now allow visitors to the facility to flex their green muscles.  All 75 trash receptacles throughout Time Warner Cable Arena have been re-branded with the Hornets silhouette and the Waste Management logo. Additionally, Waste Management has donated more than 75 recycling bins that will be paired with the trash bins. The bins will be located throughout the interior of the building, including the concourses, as well as the exterior of the venue, allowing Hornets fans and arena visitors to remain firmly entrenched in the environmental experience while enjoying the entertainment.

“We are excited about partnering with Waste Management, a true leader in providing environmental solutions for waste and recycling,” said Hornets Executive Vice President and Chief Sales & Marketing Officer Pete Guelli.  “This partnership allows us to develop an improved recycling program and helps reduce Time Warner Cable Arena’s environmental footprint. This is also a great opportunity to inspire families and visitors to make a conscious decision about recycling in an effort to help our environment.”

Waste Management will also serve as the presenting partner of the Hornets celebration of the NBA’s annual Green Week, which is scheduled for March 22-29. In partnership with the National Resources Defense Council, Green Week focuses on generating awareness to protect the environment. Throughout Green Week, the team and its players will take steps to be more environmentally friendly. Some of the team’s Green Week activities include in-arena awareness nights, recycling programs, hands-on service projects and educational curriculum. Last season, several Charlotte players teamed with Reid Park Academy students in planting trees in the Charlotte community.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Waste Management and we are excited to enhance the Hornets environmental efforts by offering sustainable solutions at Time Warner Cable Arena, and diverting material from the landfill through recycling,” said WM South Atlantic Vice President Tracey Shrader.

Waste Management has already assisted the Hornets by recycling over 8,000 pounds of old folders, letterhead, and other paper products during their rebrand transition. Additionally, Waste Management helped the team during the inaugural Hornets Day of Service by diverting nine tons of landscape waste from the local landfill.
