One of the newest fathers at Ochsner hospital’s maternity ward had an unexpected special guest Monday. The visitor, Hornets owner George Shinn, smiled when he saw what the new dad had worn to the hospital: a teal “Fan Up New Orleans” T-shirt.
“That’s a great shirt!” complimented Shinn, whose team is in the midst of the best postseason run in the franchise’s 20-year history.
Part of an annual tradition for the team’s majority owner, Shinn visited new parents and their babies at New Orleans’ Ochsner and Touro hospitals on Monday. Each year, the team owner personally stops by local hospitals to provide gift baskets to the parents of infants born on Shinn’s birthday, May 11 (the visit was delayed one day this time because the Hornets were playing Game 4 in San Antonio on Sunday).
The gift baskets include numerous items for babies, including lotions, candles, perfumes and soaps. Each basket also included a $150 gift card to Babies R Us.
Shinn joked with several of the parents he visited, complimenting them on their child’s choice of birth date. He also kidded one first-time dad that “it’s a good thing your baby looks more like their mother than their father.”
“I enjoy doing this every year and meeting the new parents,” Shinn said. “This is one of the best parts of celebrating my birthday.”
