As first reported by the Dallas Morning News, Greg Ostertag has decided to donate one of his kidneys to his lone sibling, younger sister Amy Hall. The surgery is scheduled for Thursday, June 27 at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. On Monday, June 10, Ostertag met with Salt Lake media to talk about his upcoming surgery. Below is a brief transcript of his media availability.
Greg Ostertag:
"First of all I would like to thank everyone I've seen on the street who have said they are proud of what I'm doing. I'd also like to thank Larry [Miller] and Kevin [O'Connor], when I first told them it was going to happen, I thought it was going to happen within the week. They never hesitated and said no. I'm sure I have the support of all my teammates. I also want to thank my wife."
What are your thoughts on how scary this is:
"It's scary. It's an operation; they're taking something out from inside of me. The scary part of it is that there is a small chance that something could go wrong with the actual surgery, worse case scenario, I could die. That is something I try not to think about."
"I don't look at it like I'm being a hero. This is something that anyone else would have done and that is the way I'm going into it. If it were your sister or your mother you'd go into it with the same idea that you want to be the first in line to help them out."
"When my mom called me to tell me what was going on with my sister, the first thing I said is what do I need to do what do I need to get done to be tested."
On the down time after surgery:
"Downtime depends. It all depends on which kidney they take. If they take the kidney on the left side, it would be about four weeks, if they take the right kidney it would be a larger cut and would be 4-6 weeks."
"I anticipate on being back and playing next year."
