SACRAMENTO KINGS ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP WITH CAPITAL UNITY COUNCIL FOR 10TH ANNUAL COMMUNITY CUP
Partnership to Promote and Celebrate Sacramento’s Diversity Includes $100,000 Donation

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. - Sunday, March 16, 2008 -- The Sacramento Kings and Maloof family have announced Capital Unity Council is this year’s beneficiary of the 10th annual George J. Maloof Sr. Community Cup, a partnership which includes a $100,000 donation generated by proceeds from a Kings home preseason game. Capital Unity Council is the 10th Sacramento not-for-profit organization to be named recipient of the George J. Maloof Sr. Community Cup.

“We are very pleased to partner with the Capital Unity Council,” said Joe Maloof, co-owner of Maloof Sports & Entertainment. “Their planned center embodies the spirit, diversity and sense of community in Sacramento, and we are delighted to be a part of it."

In 1999, the firebombing of three synagogues, the murder of a gay couple and the burning of a women’s health center led to thousands of people gathering at rallies in downtown Sacramento to show solidarity and to raise funds – resources that would be used both to rebuild the fire-ravaged synagogues as well as to establish an organization dedicated to transforming hate, intolerance and ignorance into mutual understanding and respect for humanity. From this grassroots initiative, the Capital Unity Council was born.

Committed to investing in the future of California’s youth, the Council resolved to create a center that would be a catalyst for uniting diverse people. Envisioned as a statewide resource, a gathering place and an interactive learning experience, the Council’s Capital Unity Center will engage youth and visitors with programs and activities that embrace inclusion, honor California’s diversity and motivate people to play an active role in building unity in their communities.

“It is an honor to receive this award from the Maloof family, the Kings and the Monarchs organization who have demonstrated their ongoing commitment to the core values of the Capital Unity Council -- inclusion, celebrating diversity and building community,” said Dennis Mangers, Chair of the Board of the Capital Unity Council. “With the Capital Unity Center, we will have a tremendous opportunity to shape the way future generations live and work together here in Sacramento and throughout the state, and we are proud to have the Maloof family join us in this endeavor.”

“I can think of no better way of honoring our father and the people of Sacramento than by participating in this remarkable project,” said Gavin Maloof, co-owner of Maloof Sports & Entertainment.

Introduced in 1999, the George J. Maloof Sr. Community Cup has resulted in more than $1 million in donations from the Maloof family to local charitable causes in the name of their father. Past Community Cup projects have included Kiwanis Family House, the Sacramento Local Conservation Corps., Cathedral Restoration Project, Airport Little League, Hemispheres After-School Arts Academy, the Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation, La Familia Counseling Center, St. Patrick’s Home and School for Children and last season’s KVIE Public Television. Since 1998, the Maloofs have donated nearly $13 million to Sacramento-area community organizations.

Sports 1140 KHTK and News10 help raise awareness and additional funds to benefit the Community Cup and are proud partners of the Sacramento Kings.
