Knicks, Celebs Name Their Favorite Book
We asked the players, executives, and celebrities in attendance at the "Read to Achieve Halloween Experience" what their favorite book is and why. The answers:
Steve Mills, President, MSG Sports Team Operations: "The Endurance" by Dr. Caroline Alexander.
"It's the story of Capt. Shackleton, the explorer who was the first person to cross Antarctica by foot. It's an incredible story of the things you can accomplish, and the adversity you can overcome, if you stay together in the face of impossible odds."
Scott Layden, General Manager: "A Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole.
"It's a wonderful read that was given to me by my Dad. So it holds a lot of personal memories for me."
Don Chaney, Head Coach: "The Three Little Pigs."
"It was a story I particularly enjoyed as a kid. Maybe because I grew up on a farm. I also love another folk story "Five Chinese Brothers." Each of the brothers has a secret strength. For instance, one does something bad and is sent to the guillotine. But another brother, who has an iron neck, substitutes for him and they both survive. I used to read these stories to my three adult children all the time -- and now I'm reading them to my two and a half grandchildren."
Cal Ramsey, Director of Special Projects: ""The Eye of the Needle" by Ken Follett.
"I also love "The Day of the Jackal" by Frederick Forsythe. They are both mysterious, suspenseful, I-can't-put-them-down books."
Kurt Thomas, Knicks forward: "The Cat in the Hat" by Dr. Seuss.
"It's very funny and always made me laugh as a kid. Now I make my three kids laugh with it."
Kym Hampton, New York Liberty forward: "In the Meantime" by Iyanla Vanzandt.
"It's a book about learning to accept where you're at. But, at the same time, it also encourages you to still have the drive to get better."
Michael Doleac, Knicks center: "The River Wide" by David James Duncan.
"It's interesting and fun. I'll tell you more about it another time but now I've got to go and play with the kids."
Howard Eisley, Knicks guard: The Biography of Malcolm X.
"It's very inspirational. Everything he went through, it's history."
Shandon Anderson, Knicks forward: The new version of the "Three Little Pigs".
"It is a book of folk tales. It's great seeing how much my kids enjoy themselves when I'm reading these tales to them."
Charlie Ward, Knicks guard: The Bible.
"Because it gives direction to my life."
David Blaine, magician: "Siddhartha" by Herman Hesse.
"It gives you the ultimate message: to give love. I also admire "The Brothers Karamazov" by Feodor Dostoyevski, Kafka's "The Metamorphosis", "The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand, "Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger, and Voltaire's "Candide"."
Kelis, singer: "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein.
"It teaches you that you can't just keep asking for and taking things. If you also learn how to give back, everything about your life will feel better."
Caroline Kennedy, Chief Executive, NYC Department of Education's Office of Strategic Partnerships: "Harry Potter" by J.K Rowling.
"It's magical. And I love the fact that he's such a smart kid."
