“City Spirit” Award Recognizes Bushwick's Jose Liz
Knicks to Honor Brooklyn Hero
NEW YORK, March 26, 2007 – The New York Knickerbockers have announced 23-year-old Jose Liz as the winner of the Sweetwater Clifton “City Spirit” Award for the month of March.
The award, named in honor of the Knicks’ first African-American player, Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton, recognizes those that have made a significant difference in the lives of others. Each month, a winner is chosen by members of the Knicks front office staff and honored at Madison Square Garden’s center court prior to a home game. Each winner receives a $2,000 donation, in their name, to a charity of their choice. Liz will accept the award during Wednesday's New York Knicks-Cleveland Cavaliers game at Madison Square Garden. He will donate the award money to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Metro New York. Liz, a resident of Bushwick, Brooklyn, is credited with saving the life of Adelaine Jean, 76, who was trapped on the top floor of a burning apartment building. Liz, who was on his way to work in Manhattan, spotted flames coming from the window of Jean's apartment and immediately jumped into action. Liz flagged down an unidentified driver for help and the two men raced into the burning building, climbed the stairs and found Jean lying helplessly on the floor of her bathroom. Liz lifted Jean into his arms and was able to break through heavy black smoke and carry the woman to safety outside just as fire trucks arrived on the scene.
