This Date in Knicks History: September 28

(1953) Knicks open training camp at Adelphi College.

(1968) Knicks lose to US Olympic team 65-64 (OT) in an exhibition game at the Garden. The Olympians were led by 19-year-old Spencer Haywood’s 17 points and Mike Barrett’s go-ahead shot with :37 remaining. Cazzie Russell led the Knicks with 12 points.

(1971) Knicks defeat the reigning ABA champion Utah Stars 96-89 at Salt Palace in franchise’s first ever interleague preseason game. Walt Frazier leads the way with 19 points.

(1981) Jose Calderon born in Villanueva de la Serena, Badajos, Spain. 

(1982) Knicks sign five-year veteran forward Bernard King to an offer sheet. Golden State would match the offer, but would later trade King to the Knicks on Oct.22 for guard Micheal Ray Richardson and a 1984 fifth round draft pick (Scott McCollum).

(1985) Patrick Ewing practices for the first time as a Knick with training camp opening at Hofstra University.

(1994) Former Knicks general manager and forward Ernie Grunfeld, forward Bernard King, guard Ossie Schectman and forward Cal Ramsey are inducted into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame.
