This year, Knicks players Jerome James, Mardy Collins, Randolph Morris and Liberty legend Kym Hampton showed up in Dobbs Ferry to teach the kids the fundamentals of basketball.

On this very special Wednesday afternoon, more than 40 kids ran onto the basketball court at the gymnasium, their heads tilting upward to see what these giants were doing in their gym.

The afternoon started off with some basic warm-ups, including stretching led by Community Relations Specialist Troy Bowers. Afterwards, the kids ran some laps around the gym, lapping their coaches several times in youthful exuberance.

As per the custom at these clinics, the children were divided into four groups and led by their coaches to a basket where they’d begin their training camp with Knicks players. At the main basket, Collins instructed his new campers on how to use proper form on the jumpshot. Meanwhile, across the gym, James and Hampton went over the principles of rebounding and pivoting. Finally, on the side baskets, Randolph played drill sergeant while teaching the kids how to play defense and used relay races to help the kids improve their dribbling.

Once the four groups rotated around the gym to each basket, the kids participated in some shooting contests to promote good sportsmanship and competition. After layup and jumpshot contests, the kids gathering around the 3 point line of the main basket and were handed goody bags by all their Knicks heroes, including prizes such as magnets, hats, t-shirts, and magazines.

The kids had the time of their life, and the afternoon ended with the children’s faces lit up, the players playing one-on-one with anyone brave enough to challenge them, and a pizza party…which of course is the perfect ending to every kid’s dream day!
