New York Knicks Official Press Release

The New York Knickerbockers have selected Danilo Gallinari from Italy with the sixth overall selection in the 2008 NBA Draft.

"We think we have an unusual package in this young man with size, shooting and ball-handling ability," President, Basketball Operations Donnie Walsh said. "He has the type of game that can bring people together and make them better. We are very happy to have Danilo."

Gallinari, 6-9, 225-pounds, was an early entry candidate for the 2008 NBA Draft. The 19-year-old Italian native averaged a team-high 17.5 points and 5.7 rebounds last season for Armani Jeans Milano of the Italian A-1 League, while tallying 14.9 points and 4.2 rebounds in 2008 Euroleague play. He was named Euroleague Rising Star for the 2007-08 season.

"He will be a tough competitor, will play hard and is very intelligent," Head Coach Mike D’Antoni said. "This is how you build a team. He is a tremendous talent."

Gallinari was named an Italian League All-Star in 2007 and scored in double figures during the last two seasons with Milano.

Gallinari’s father, Vittorio, played professionally in Italy for many years, and was teammates with Knicks Head Coach Mike D’Antoni. Born in Sant’Angelo Lodigiano, Italy, Gallinari turned professional during the 2004-05 season at age 15.
