3) Knicks at Spurs (December 10, 2014)
Just about a month into the new season, the defending champs will provide a litmus test for the Knicks in their pursuit of a return to the postseason. The Spurs are the crown jewel of the NBA after successfully dissecting the Heat to raise their fifth title banner this past June. This December matchup is intriguing on many levels, as San Antonio seems primed for another deep playoff run.
The Spurs always find the diamond in the rough (see Kawhi Leonard) and the No. 30 overall pick Kyle Anderson fits that mold as it looks like they selected a potential steal in the 2014 NBA Draft. The role players are back in the fold, which includes Matt Bonner, Boris Diaw, and Patty Mills. And, of course, Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, and Manu Ginobili return as the seasoned vets on a loaded squad. Leonard’s continued development allows San Antonio to rely on a young, two-way emerging star that just captured a Finals MVP.
Last season, New York exacted revenge following a 120-89 defeat at home with a resounding four-point victory in the Spurs barn. Carmelo Anthony dropped 27 in the win and Iman Shumpert emerged as the hero to score a career-high 27 points.
The two teams will meet in San Antonio on Wednesday night, December 10th and back at the Garden on March 17th while the Knicks are in the midst of a tough stretch facing seven straight Western Conference opponents.
