Talk about being named to the Pacers' 40th anniversary team.
Reggie Miller: First and foremost if you’re selected to any team that goes back 40 years, obviously you are going to be honored. Some of the great Pacer players – Roger Brown, Mel Daniels, Bob Netolicky, Billy Keller, guys that I have played with when I first came to the Pacers, Herb Williams, Vern Fleming, Chuck Person, these are guys that really set the foundation for the Pacers. So to be mentioned with the likes of those guys is truly humbling.
Give me your take on the other players selected.
Mark Jackson
Miller: The best point guard I ever played with. Truly a gifted passer and playmaker
Rik Smits
Miller: A very underrated big man. When you talk about the great big men of all time, he will never be mentioned. For a guy his size at 7-4, who had that type of touch, very underrated.
George McGinnis
Miller: Probably one of the most gifted Pacer players of all-time. You talk about a lot of the younger guys coming out of high school, George was the same size in high school as he was when he entered the pros.
Jermaine O'Neal
Miller: The face of the franchise now. If George McGinnis is the most gifted four man in Pacers history, Jermaine is what I called the new breed, a guy that blocks shots, scores, rebounds and does it all.
Mel Daniels
Miller: The heart and soul of the Pacers. Mel is one of those players who can play in any generation and any era. Obviously he played in the ‘60s and ‘70s, but he would be just as successful today as he was back then. He could have played in the '80s and '90s, it doesn’t matter. Mel is one of those players that transcends whatever era he played in.
Billy Keller
Miller: He was really one of those early prototypical point guards who wasn’t the biggest guy, but you talk about being hard-nosed, knock down big long range shots, Billy was that kind of player.
Roger Brown
Miller: He may have been the closest thing to Michael Jordan of his era. A player that definitely should have been a Hall of Fame player. He had it all. He could score, he was cat quick, could rebound, great defender. I would put him and Mel as the two most popular Pacers.
Dale Davis and Antonio Davis
Miller: I put Dale and Antonio, my two Davis boys, those are my two bodyguards. Dale was a fierce competitor. Dale did all of our dirty work. He made sure that Mark, myself and even Rik had room to operate by setting screens and being the intimidator. Both Davis boys brought that to the table for us, but Dale just because he was so tough, fiercely tough. Antonio was probably a little more skilled offensively than Dale, but it was funny, because if you got beat left or right, you had one Davis on one block and one Davis on the other block. You had to pick your poison as to which side you were going to drive to because both were going to knock your head off.
Billy Knight
Miller: One of the great three men. My first few years in the league, I had a chance to watch Billy Knight play as I was growing up. He was one of those tough-nosed small forwards that brought a lot to the table for the Pacers.
Clark Kellogg
Miller: It is unfortunate that I never got a chance to play with Clark because he retired in ’86. I came in in ’87 and he retired the year before. I thought if he never would have had knee problems, he could have been considered one of the great small forwards of all time.
The playoffs are upon us. How excited are you?
Miller: You’re always excited. This is what you play the whole year for. This next month and a half, two months, you get locked into a series. You get a chance to make adjustments. You have your eye on the prize. This is why you play 82 games, to get ready for this.
What are you most looking forward when action begins next Saturday?
Miller: Obviously the West is going to be so competitive with Dallas, San Antonio, Phoenix, but you really can’t count out teams like Utah and Houston who are playing great right now. You just hope that whoever comes out of the West, I’m sure they’ll have enough, but they’re going to be so tired and battered from going against one another. It could be a lot like last year where a team from the East, where the competition isn’t as strong, could end up winning again because the teams in the West are going to be so tired from long series. The key in the West is to try to get your series over by five games, because if you go six or seven games, a lot can happen because you’re going to be so tired.
Playoff Predictions?
Miller: All along I’ve said Dallas is the best team before the season started. I am just going to stick with that. They have the most depth. They’re well coached and they’re confident.
Who do you like out of the East?
Miller: I am picking Detroit. I am curious to see how Dwyane Wade comes back with Miami. I have them in the Eastern Conference Finals going against Detroit. Don’t count out Chicago. Right now it’s that time of year where it looks like they have their legs behind them and Scott Skiles will have them prepared. I have Detroit coming out against Miami.
