The Pacers, in conjunction with 100 Black Men of Indianapolis, hosted the 100 Black Men Scholastic Basketball Program Awards Ceremony in Conseco Fieldhouse's Pepsi Square on Friday, Jan. 19, 2007.
Pacers players Darrell Armstrong and David Harrison, along with Bowser, one of the Pacers' mascots, was on hand congratulating the students, distributing medals, certificates and goodie bags to the top "point-earners" from seven Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) schools (#11, #14, #34, #37, #54, #99, #105 and #106). In addition, both players took a group photo with each winning school.
The 100 Black Men Scholastic Basketball Program was designed to raise the level of scholastic achievement in the classroom and at home, as well as on and off the basketball court. Each week IPS students are given scores based on effort, conduct and attendance. By achieving good scores in these areas the students earn points which provide them the opportunity to play basketball with the student's team and compete with other schools. At the end of the program, the Pacers host an awards ceremony for the top students.
100 Black Men of Indianapolis began the Scholastic Basketball Program for fourth and fifth grade students at several IPS schools. Key school officials and staff readily support this program that improves scholastic effort, conduct, attendance and character. The emphasis is placed upon personal responsibility, accountability, rules, leadership skills and teamwork.
This program is managed through 100 Black Men.
