Atkins played in all 82 games as a rookie but did not make a single start, backing up Darrell Armstrong at point guard. He averaged 9.5 points, 3.7 assists and 0.63 steals in 19.8 minutes per game, ranking second on the team in assists and fourth in scoring. He shot .424 from the field, .350 from three-point range and .729 from the free throw line. His 57 three-point field goals ranked third on the team. Atkins was voted to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team, ranking fifth among all first-year players in three-point field goal percentage, seventh in assists, eighth in scoring and 10th in field goal accuracy. He was third among all rookies in points per 48 minutes at 23.1. He led the Magic in assists 28 times, including a career-high 13 assists against Golden State on Feb. 7. He scored in double figures 36 times, with four 20 games topped by a career-high 22 points at Cleveland on Dec. 22 and again at New York on Feb. 1. He led the team in scoring 11 times.

COLLEGE:
Atkins finished his career as South Florida's career leader in three-pointers made and attempted with 244-of-674, and ranked second with 519 assists and third with 1,619 points. He earned All-Metro Conference honors in 1995 after averaging 16.8 points and 6.5 assists per game, then earned All-Conference USA honors as a senior after averaging 19.3 points and 4.0 assists per game. He also was a member of the gold medal-winning U.S. National Team at the 1995 World University Games.
