On Arizona Sports: McDonough Likes Odds in Free Agency

The Suns are in the midst of a heated playoff race out West, but there is still an awareness of the team's timeline beyond this season. Phoenix holds multiple assets, including upcoming cap room and extra draft picks, with which they can further bolster their overall talent.

When and how to use them, however, is not something that is finitely and foolishly planned before other resolutions take place. On Arizona Sports 98.7 FM, Suns General Manager Ryan McDonough explained some of the more immediate concerns before those long-term tools come into play.

"It's not something we predetermine," McDonough said. "We have it set up now where we have a decent amount in the summer of 2015. We have some key free agents this summer in Goran Dragic and Gerald Green that we'd like to re-sign. We'll see how it goes."

"Right now our main focus is trying to win as many games as we can, trying to make the playoffs. If we do get there, win in the playoffs," he added. "After the season's over, we'll re-evaluate and see where we are in terms of the draft and free agency."

The latter process is always a captivating one for onlookers. When established, star players are up for grabs, local fan bases harbor hopes that their team will wind up on their short lists.

McDonough used recent history as evidence that Phoenix will always be a factor on the free agent market.

"Jerry Colangelo was able to get Tom Chambers [in 1988]," he said. "[Suns Managing Partner] Robert Sarver and company and Jerry and that group got Steve Nash. There have been some very good players, if you look at the Suns relative to other NBA teams. This is a place where people have been able to recruit in the past."

"I think with all the things that the city of Phoenix and the state of Arizona has going for it, we'll be in the mix when those top free agents come," McDonough added.
